Breaking Open the Sunday Lectionary
Wednesday Mornings

There are many ways to study the Bible. One way that combines both Old & New Testament study is "Breaking Open the Sunday Lectionary". The Lectionary is the book that contains the scripture readings that we read at Mass. Catholics and many mainline Protestants share this set of Scripture readings that have been carefully chosen in order to teach a lesson or present a common theme within the context of the liturgical year. Every Liturgical year we celebrate the great mysteries of our faith beginning with the Advent season, during which we spend four weeks preparing for the coming of Christ. Next is the Christmas season, then a period called Ordinary time in which we meditate on the public life of Christ. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and continues with six weeks of preparation for the celebration of theResurrection, Ascension and coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. A long period of Ordinary time begins again which ultimately presents great passages of scripture that point to the world-to-come; eternity.

By contemplating the Scriptures presented in our Sunday Lectionary, Catholics become familiar with both the Old and New Testament. Christ is not only made present among us when the scriptures are read aloud, but he is eager to draw near and walk with us. Beginning with Creation, Abraham, Moses and all the prophets, Jesus, present in our midst, interprets what refers to him in all the scriptures.

If you are ineterested in this type of Bible Study, you are welcome to join us every Wednesday morning at 9:10 AM until about 10:15 AM in the nursery. Group discussion is facilitated by Michelle Black. For more information about this Bible Study and other Bible Studies available at St. John the Baptist, call Michelle Black at 303-776-0737, ext 145 or michelleb@johnthebaptist.org.
